Kilimanjaro route
Kilimanjaro's most popular route: varied scenery, the famous Barranco Wall and a good ‘climb high, sleep low’ acclimatisation profile.
The Machame route climbs from the southern rainforest onto the Shira Plateau, then traverses beneath Kibo's southern ice fields via the Lava Tower and Barranco Valley before the summit push from Barafu Camp.
It is commonly climbed over six or seven days; the longer option allows extra acclimatisation and generally improves the chance of reaching the summit comfortably.
The Barranco Wall involves a non-technical scramble using hands for balance. Good hiking fitness, broken-in boots and warm layers for the summit night are essential.
