Giant groundsel plants beside a mountain stream on Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro route

Marangu Route

  • Marangu Gate
  • Mountain huts

The only route with hut accommodation; a steady trail ascending and descending on the same path from the south-east.

Marangu is Kilimanjaro's oldest established route and the only one with dormitory-style huts instead of tents. It is often climbed over five or six days.

Because the ascent is relatively direct, the six-day version with an acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut is generally recommended.

Route highlights

  • Hut accommodation
  • Gradual, well-maintained trail
  • Mandara and Horombo huts
  • Gilman's Point and Uhuru Peak

Preparing for this route

Do not underestimate Marangu: the altitude is the same as on every route. An extra acclimatisation day is a wise investment.

  • Machame Gate
  • Mountain tents

Kilimanjaro's most popular route: varied scenery, the famous Barranco Wall and a good ‘climb high, sleep low’ acclimatisation profile.

A scenic, quieter approach from the west, crossing the entire Shira Plateau — often chosen for its excellent acclimatisation.
